The Cardinals and Dodgers square off Wednesday night in L.A. for the right to face the Giants in the NLDS
On Wednesday night, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers will play this year’s National League Wild Card Game. The single-elimination contest will dictate who advances to the next round, wherein they’ll play a best-of-five division series against the San Francisco Giants, and who heads home to begin their offseason. You can view the full postseason schedule by clicking here.
The defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers won 106 games this season, but it still wasn’t good enough to win the National League West division title. So they find themselves playing in the NL wild-card game against the St. Louis Cardinals, knowing a loss will instantly end their reign.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, come to Dodger Stadium on a roll. They won 23 of 31 games in September and October — including a franchise-record 17 in a row — that propelled them into the playoff picture.
The Dodgers may have a couple cracks in their armor. Star pitcher Clayton Kershaw won’t pitch in the postseason because of a forearm injury. And first baseman Max Muncy is out with an elbow injury he suffered in a collision in the regular season finale. He’s not expected back for the division series if the Dodgers advance.
With that throat-clearing out of the way, let’s get to the important stuff.
The Los Angeles Dodgers host the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Wild Card Game!
The good news? The Dodgers won 106 regular season games, which is the second best total in all of baseball. The bad news? Their division rival, the San Francisco Giants, won 107 regular season games, which means the Dodgers have to win a one-game Wild Card matchup against the Cardinals in order to advance to the division series. Is it fair? Not really. Does it make for good baseball? Absolutely.
The Cardinals are coming off of an astounding 17-game winning streak as they send veteran righty Adam Wainwright (17-7) to the mound, while the Dodgers counter with three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer. It’s a battle of aces in this must-see NL Wild Card matchup.
